Lane & Co. Mallard TV LampI suppose that the thing that excites me the most about researching the companies that produced TV lamps is the hunt itself, the detective-like sleuthing that is called for. Fifty-plus years have passed since any of the manufacturers were founded, and few resources exist to help learn their history. But determination often proves fruitful, and I’ve had surprising luck in gathering data on previously obscure companies…and enjoyed every minute of it. It must be said, however, that the total absence of progress on Lane & Company gets me a little miffed. Without a doubt, Lane was one of the largest potteries in the world, producing a staggering volume of ceramic wares of all types. So how is it that there’s no leads? I’ve yet to find a product catalog, clues in pottery books or anything that would lead me to a former employee…or even the descendant of an employee! I haven’t given up, as someday lightning could strike.

I believe the company was founded in, or shortly after, the year 1950. Early pieces are marked with Los Angeles as their source of origin, with a Van Nuys marking (or label) coming into use a few years later. Another marking that distinguishes the earliest pieces is what appears to be a designer’s mark, Nickerson. I’ve found that marking on numerous figurines and planters, but never on a TV lamp. Much later, towards the end of Lane’s existence, it appears they were bought out, the name becoming Lane Ceramics - A Division of Condecor.

So, that’s all I think I know about Lane & Company, undoubtedly the largest producer of TV lamps. I would appreciate hearing from anyone that might provide further insight. Tom Gilchrist is an enthusiastic collector of Lane cookie jars, and is as perplexed as I am regarding the lack of company history. He has a terrific website, Lane Cookie Jars, that is definitely worth your time.
