Mystery Lamp: That’s one Crazy Rooster!
Gosh, I don’t know where to begin. Is this not the craziest rooster of all time?! Without a doubt, it’s finds like this that keep me enthusiastic about TV lamp collecting. The colors, the bold (and seriously peculiar) design… it just doesn’t get any better than this. Actually it does get better. It’s for sale! This gem is now at auction on eBay, and is item #190156629661. Not only that, but it’s being offered by eBay seller, bucksonbay, an extremely dependable retailer of awesome TV lamps and other stuff. OK, I believe it’s time to put our thinking caps on… who do you suppose made this crazed bird? Given that the lamp is absent of any markings, we’ll just have to do a little detective work, hopefully finding stylistic similarities between it and other known lamps.
The wing position is not unlike that on one of Lane & Company’s swan lamps, but I think that’s coincidence, as Lane was pretty good about including markings. Then there’s the applied colors, “cold painted” in the manner so often used by McCoy. Nope. McCoy never went in for such grandiose TV lamps, preferring to keep their designs simple. Now there is one lamp that comes to mind, one that is an over-the-top design that also has cold-painted details. Ever seen one of those artist’s palette TV lamps? They came with various solid color glazes, with color applied to the globs of paint.
The two lamps share crazy styling and cold-applied paint, both intriguing clues. But is it enough to say that they were made by the same company? I’m afraid not, and unfortunately we don’t have anything else to go on. But since the palette lamp is also unattributed, I don’t guess it matters much! I love a mystery.
Who made the rooster isn’t that significant, as it stands (and crows) on its own merits. It is valuable for the rarity (very rare), the bold colors and in-your-face styling, regardless of the maker. Hmm… maybe Royal Fleet?
