Postcard with TV Lamp

It’s not often that TV lamps show up on postcards…in fact, this is the only example I’m aware of!  I found this little gem on eBay, and have always hoped I could find out more about it. I posted this previously in my old “news page”, but thought also I’d include it here as well as it’s liable to get more circulation. The main target of my curiosity is the store that so generously offered a lovely Lampcrafts ship with a new account. Given that this promotional card gives no clue as to what business “Lewis” was involved in, I’m sure that they must have been a household name in mid-50s Louisville. (the card appears to be dated 1954) My guess is that they were a department store, but I’d like to know for certain and hopefully get someones recollections. Are there any Kentuckians out there that can shed some light on this mystery?

There’s a Lewis & Company of Kentucky Inc located near this address in the Starks Building. A sky scraper which along with attendant parking garages have changed the landscape completely in Louisville, KY. They are listed as a “Food Broker” ??

Couldn’t find anything further but then considering the local history regarding Lewis & Clark just about every other business is name Lewis.

Maybe someone local knows the real story….

I hadn’t thought about the Lewis & Clark thing! (sort of like everything in Texas being named “Alamo”) Hopefully someone that grew up there in the ’50s or ’60s will know the scoop and enlighten us.

I stumbled across the image of this great postcard while doing a Google image search for pottery postcards. I collect postcards showing pottery and tableware for sale and have seen similar post cards but never with a TV lamp. The postcards in my collection which are almost identical except for the item being given away free are from jewelry stores that sold on credit. Hope this helps.

I didn’t think about it possibly being a jewelry store…a definite possibility! I’m still surprised that a local historian hasn’t chimed in to let us know about the Lewis store. Maybe one day!
