The Premco Manufacturing Co. is best known for oriental themes, making TV lamps and table lamps using the two figurines shown here. As did most potteries of the day, Premco decorated the figures with "cold" paint. This consisted of hand painting the color with enamel after firing, a technique often used with red, as the color was difficult to fire in high-temperature kiln. This lamp displays the usual deterioration of the cold paint, a result of the poor adhesion to the hard, glazed surface.
The remainder of this lamp is excellent, with little loss of the extensive gold detailing, and no chips, cracks or repairs. Even the original shade is serviceable! The plated hardware (harp, finial) have a good bit of rust, but are easily replaced. Marked 1954-55 Premco Mfg. Co. Chicago, Ill, it's 17 1/2" tall (with shade) and 15" wide.
